Liverpool Cathedral Architect

The role of Architect is a key position at Liverpool Cathedral - one of the world’s great buildings. We are looking for someone with energy, creativity, dynamism and design skill to fulfil this role.

The principal duties, qualifications and attributes can be summarised as follows (for further detail please see the Application pack). Most are discharged with and through Cathedral colleagues.


Principal duties come under the following headings:

o     Planning repairs & maintenance

o     Development work

o     Conservation

o     Fire audit, disaster planning, health & safety matters

o     New fittings, works of art and such like

o     Recording of works undertaken

o     Quinquennial inspection & report

o     Annual Report to Chapter

o     Attending meetings (esp Fabric Advisory Committee and Maintenance Committee)



The successful candidate must have at least the following qualifications:

o     A registered architect (‘architect’ means a person registered under the Architects Act 1997)

o     An Architect Accredited in Building Conservation



The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate:

o     Architectural knowledge and imagination.

o     Extensive experience of architectural work in and around ecclesiastical buildings.

o     The ability to work collaboratively and prioritise competing challenges within realistic budgets.

o     Good management, team and interpersonal skills.

o     Good oral and written communication and presentation, including the use of drawings.

o     The ability to analyse problems, exercise aesthetic judgment, and prepare for complex missional, philosophical and design decisions.

o     Skill in combining attention to detail in maintenance and conservation with the insight and courage to enhance the fabric and fittings of the Cathedral through new work.

o     An awareness and sensitivity of the Cathedral as a place of worship, a living community of staff and volunteers, and a major visitor attraction.

o     A statement of why you consider you are suitable for the appointment

o     A short statement of their philosophical approach to the care and conservation of historic buildings, and in particular to the task of Cathedral Architect/Surveyor.
