Independent Adviser to the Architects Registration Board’s Prescription Committee
The Architects Registration Board (ARB) is the UK’s statutory regulator of architects, set up by Parliament under the Architects Act 1997. ARB is looking to appoint up to four Independent Advisers to its Prescription Committee, which is responsible for overseeing the operation of procedures for prescribing architectural qualifications, as well as considering and developing policies relating to the prescription of qualifications. ARB is also looking to appoint one of these Independent Advisers to serve as a member of the Prescription Committee.
Independent Advisers are expected to make an active contribution to the Prescription Committee using their skills, knowledge and experience to help the Committee reach sound decisions which it can then recommend to ARB’s Board. They are also expected to bring their independent judgment, experience and critical detachment to the Committee’s discussions.
Independent Advisers will be appointed for a period of four years in the first instance. The appointment may be renewed for a further period of four years subject to satisfactory performance. The term of office will commence on a date to be agreed, subject to the agreement of the ARB Prescription Committee and the ARB Board. Independent Advisers carrying out this specific role may be appointed for a maximum period of two consecutive terms, e.g., eight years, in line with the Board’s policy on the appointment of advisers and external professionals.
With a background in higher education, and preferably within a school or institution of architecture, applicants will have prior experience of delivering and developing architectural qualifications and of higher education quality assurance processes. They will also have experience and knowledge of engaging with current policy developments and issues that impact upon the higher education sector within the UK, Europe and overseas. Knowledge of ARB’s procedures and criteria for prescribing qualifications is desirable.
Successful applicants could be expected to spend up to 15 days a year on Committee business. This may include Committee meetings, attendance at an annual training/briefing session, preparation time for meetings as well as the preparation of advice in relation to applications for prescription/renewal of prescription. In return, we offer £275 a day for attendance at Committee meetings and training sessions, as well as £55 an hour for reading/preparation time for meetings. Reasonable expenses for travel and subsistence will also be paid. All payments are subject to tax and National Insurance.
Closing date for completed applications is 5.00 pm on Wednesday 28 February 2018 and interviews will be held on 13 and 15 March 2018.
