Applicants are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture and the Department of Civil Engineering for the BASc Design+ Programme (Ref.: 493737), to commence on September 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
This is a joint appointment between the Department of Architecture in the Faculty of Architecture and the Department of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, with the former being the home department. The post will initially be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Exceptionally outstanding candidate at Professor or Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenured terms.
The Design+ Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc) is a new undergraduate degree launching in 2019. It is aimed at nurturing highly effective, adaptive and creative graduates who can lead across multiple disciplinary subjects, and who will become known globally for their distinctive qualities of creativity, analytical ability, critical thinking and innovative problem-solving. Design is taught in a collaborative studio environment with each student having the option to enroll in a second major of their choice at HKU, providing a distinct foundational approach to interdisciplinary studies, innovation, and enterprise. Applicants should possess a postgraduate and professional degree and preference will be given to those holding a Ph.D. degree in Design, Architecture, Engineering, or an affiliated discipline and/or professional qualifications. They should have experience in teaching design in a multi-disciplinary context. They should demonstrate an established record of research and critical practice in the form of design projects, theoretical explorations or creative work, and a capacity to integrate the different elements of their research and practice into teaching. As the Department of Architecture moves to strengthen international links with academic institutions and innovators in design throughout Asia and the world, applicants who have a record of building such partnerships are encouraged to apply. Strong writing skills and grant-writing experience are also welcome as staff members are expected to pursue funding opportunities to advance their research.
The appointee will oversee the BASc Design+ curriculum, programme operations, course delivery, and quality assurance. He/She will also supervise research students and work within other related research labs on inter-faculty, interdisciplinary and innovative projects. He/She should be able to conduct teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels for the following courses: design studios, core courses on communication, technology, and advanced seminars in design.

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the five engineering departments in the Faculty of Engineering. The Department has a world class reputation for leading research and teaching in civil engineering, and has nurtured high-caliber leaders for the community as well as the civil engineering profession. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
